Last Day of Songkran

After all the blessings and splashing all the way from Koh Samet, we were back to Eastern Bus Terminal!

Along the highway, we could see how Thai people have fun during this hottest season of the year!

0387_20090415_Bangkok_070

Yeah, these tongs were all filled with water!! And they were splashing water and powder on every person and vehicle along their way! >@<

0388_20090415_Bangkok_073

Most vehicles (and people) would look like this during Songkran festival unless you don’t want to be blessed!!

0386_20090414_Bangkok_021

Three armed soldiers at the bus station symbolized our arrival back to the land of the City of Angels. They were there probably as a consequence of political tension during the state of emergency!

0389_20090415_Bangkok_080

At the entrance of each MRT station, reminders requested all guests to “empty” their gun before entering the station =.="

0385_20090414_Bangkok_012 0384_20090414_Bangkok_011

We could feel the excitement of Thai people doing all the splashing on their last day of Songkran. We walked back to Sitara Place from Phra Ram 9 MRT Station and still managed to get a little bit of splashing along the road back... but I was eager to get more!

0390_20090415_Bangkok_084

Nat suggested that we only get the water gun war the next day in Khao San as Thai government announced another 2 days holiday. And according to the online news, the water gun war in Khao San would be extended for one more day. So we arranged something else that night!

We took the MRT train from Phra Ram 9 to Lumphini station and walked to the famous Polo Fried Chicken for our dinner.

0391_20090415_Bangkok_085

We ordered the famous fried chicken with garlic, minced pork, fried catfish salad and sticky rice.

0392_20090415_Bangkok_091

The sticky rice was served in a traditional rice bucket..

0393_20090415_Bangkok_092

The sticky rice..

0394_20090415_Bangkok_093

This is the fried catfish salad that I like most!!

0395_20090415_Bangkok_094

Then it was one whole night shopping at Suan Lum Night Bazaar just located next to Lumphini Station.

0396_20090415_Bangkok_098 0397_20090415_Bangkok_101

Something funny in our train back was that the train was full with “wet” and “powdered” Thai youngsters, some still “armed” with their water gun, shivering in the air-conditioned train.. Most of them had just completed their mission in Silom!! Haha..

Low Yat

0382_20090920_023_Old Town 0379_20090920_015_Old Town

0375_20090920_006_Old Town 0376_20090920_007_Old Town

Kari laksa。。

0377_20090920_012_Old Town

0378_20090920_013_Old Town

0381_20090920_019_Old Town

Sob sob。。

Din Tai Fung

0362_20090918_001_Din Tai Fung

Supposed to be a bigger group outing, but shrunk to 4 persons onle.. Think this restaurant is quite popular also, many guests... Luckily this time was not as Fong Lye – we didn’t wait long to get seated!

The best part is you have a chance to glance into the glassed kitchen how your xiao long baos are prepared...

0364_20090918_016_Din Tai Fung

Different types of xiao long bao are ready to serve!

1 set of 6 original xiao long bao!

0366_20090918_025_Din Tai Fung

Which we thought we should go for more.. another 2 sets of crab xiao long bao served!! They waiter stacked one on top of the other to keep the bottom ones warm.

0371_20090918_037_Din Tai Fung

A small tip on xiao long bao: take a small bite at the softer part of the skin and sip the meat juice within before gulping the whole in!

This was recommended by Calvin, mango shrimp rolls!! Great taste and texture. The refreshing tropical fruity taste was special! Must try again next time!!

0367_20090918_028_Din Tai Fung

Basically, 2 major groups of main course: la mian or fried rice.

Mabel’s choice of Dan Dan la mian.

0369_20090918_032_Din Tai Fung

Calvin’s choice of pork chop la mian. Pork chop is also available a la carte.

0368_20090918_031_Din Tai Fung

Fei’s choice of shrimp pork fried rice.

0372_20090918_040_Din Tai Fung

My choice of chicken chop fried rice. Chicken chop is also available a la carte.

0370_20090918_036_Din Tai Fung

This meal was really full... may be too much of carbohydrate!! And also because of the crazy 18 xiao long baosss! Good dining in general!

Dine-in Bangkok

Eventually decided to start my first step on the land of the City of Angels! This trip was made happened in last April..

Accommodation was confirmed in Nat’s apartment@Sitara Place. Conversed with Nat through MSN and she emphasized so much on how not to get cheated by taxi driver. This made me worry instead whether it is safe to travel alone!

Fei also taught me some tips, especially on places I must go, food I must try, and the kind of shopping I must do...

Due to the anti-government protests, PM Abhisit announced state of emergency in Bangkok the day before my trip!! Nat and Fei in Bangkok said it was still safe to go.

Another problem was my limited budget! I could only manage to change 8000THB! But I still survived this trip!! >.<

It took me around 2 hours to fly there. Once off the plane, everybody was rushing. Just shot a few photos. I stopped whenever I saw the demon statues at the arrival hall, and took some quick photos of them.

0351_20090413_Bangkok_016 0352_20090413_Bangkok_017

Nice airport! Doesn't seem to lose if not better than KLIA. All custom staff in the counter was in Hawaiian shirt, a celebration for Songkran (April 13 to 15). Sorry, couldn't see what kind of pant they wear.. =.="

After taking my check-in bag, I first approached a counter and they offered me 1600THB for a ride to Ratchada Soi 3. They straightaway offered me some “good discount” when I complained about the price!! Which after I found out it was a limo counter, I turned my head for public taxi.

When coming out from Exit 1, I saw a taxi stand with the sign “Taxi – With Meter”. After getting the taxi ticket, a row of taxi drivers actually queued up waiting for me!! ;)

Before I actually use the statement I learned from Fei - “chai meter”, the driver assigned to me set the meter on! This relieved me a bit being alone on this strange land. I think Thai people are honest!

0359_20090413_Bangkok_031

On the way to Nat’s place, the streets had scarce pedestrians and ain’t many cars on road. May be the state of emergency had gave such an impact to the capital??

I was lucky that I saw Sitara Place at a glance on my left when the driver missed Soi 11. I paid a 1000THB note and worried that the driver may not pay me back full change. But he actually did! Again, I think Thai people are honest!!

0358_20090413_Bangkok_030

We went to a local stall for dinner. First got into my eyes was the huge pork legs!! There were also BBQ pork, BBQ chicken, some unknown vegetables and something looked like BBQ sausages.

0354_20090413_Bangkok_023

0355_20090413_Bangkok_024

Nat helped me order in Thai.. Wow!!

Three dishes: my favourite pork leg sliced served with boiled egg, papaya som tam and BBQ pork served with vegetables.

0357_20090413_Bangkok_028

Getting what the local eats is the best way to experience their culture and lifestyle. I enjoyed the dinner especially the pork leg, it was YUM!!

It was all about discussion and planning for tomorrow’s itinerary that first night. Due to the protests, most shopping malls closed for business and there shouldn't be many places we can go. The sight-seeing wats are all located near the government buildings where protestors were active. Out of no choice, I agreed Nat’s suggestion to Koh Samet...
